28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

Hi,
I'm looking for a 28' to 34' secondhand performance cruiser or cruiser racer and am having a struggle finding a list to make a shortlist from.
My basic criteria are; Wheel steering, inboard diesel, fin keel, modern (post 1990) £25 - £40,000
Maybe Beneteau/Jeanneau but which types? Dufour/Hanse/Elan/Feeling? Which ones have wheel steering? can i buy a book/ Download a list, can anyone please help. searching the ads doesnt help much as few mention if they are tiller or wheel and assume the searcher knows what he wants!
If only!
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, and I hope that you'll get the information you need.

I'm sure you have good reasons for making wheel steering a priority, but was just wondering why, as lots of perfectly good boats in that size area are, arguably, the better for having tiller steering - takes up less space in the cockpit, more sensitive (the helm can "feel" the flow of water and the pressures on the rudder - probably helps sail trim awareness etc).

Good luck with your search!

Re: 28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

SOme folk just prefer twiddling a wheel...Just like cat sailors get used to boats that don t sway with the wind, wheel sailors learn to sail without feeling a throbbing tiller in their hand /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have a wheel on my Chieftain and much prefer it to tillers on similar Westerlys etc from Centaur up to Storm. DOn t get tiller elbow either which the Storm would cause /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would look at the Hanse....nice looking boats and a nicely placed Chrome wheel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

A very quick search found me this.

Dehler 34 Which would seem to fit all your criteria.

Also worth looking at are the X boats, X332 especially, which were availiable with a wheel as an option. Could well push the budget though.

The fast Beneteaus, the "first" series, would also be worth a look. Can't remember off the top of my head the smallest of them to have wheel steering.

Pretty sure the Elan 333 has a wheel, and that's a cracking boat.

Have a look on Boatshed website. You need to log in to see all the photos. This may be worth a look. Boat with Wheel

By coincidence another Dehler.

Re: 28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

a MG335 would fit the bill, but they are hard to find in good nick.

As previously mentioned, Dehler 34.

Hanse 315/310 can be found with a wheel,, but I doubt for 40k., the 301 didnt have the option. (I think) The 331 might have, but again tight at 40k.

If you could stretch to 45 k then the options do open up.

You may want to look at a fully battened deep keeled Bav 31 from around 1999/2000, Im a bit biased, but she might fit the bill, even thought shes not thought of as a Cruiser/racer.

Price would be right, has a wheel.

Sygma 33 would be good, but no wheel.

Usually in the adds on YBW it says "Tiller Steered" or Wheel steered.

Re: 28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

Scanmar 33 or 345. Excellent whitlock rack and pinion steering, as good as tiller.

Re: 28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

Excellent suggestion... nearly bought a 35 a few years ago myself!

Re: 28\'-34\' yacht with wheel wanted!

Thanks Guys, Boatshed and apollo duck are good sites, is just that not everyone puts if its wheel or tiller steered and for a newbie its not allways easy to find out!
Why a wheel? Well after 25 years racing dinghys im fed up with hanging onto a stick all the time and crewing on my mates wheel steered Sweden (yes, i know, i've been spoilt!) has convinced me! Anyway i can hang onto my beer and fag!
Hanse 301 looks good, any reports? Also Jeanneau 31 Sunlight and Feeling 1100?
