Hi Roger,

I can see my late parents boat almost dried out at the edge of the water.
We moved her at high water on the Saturday.

My main recollection is that there was no electric in their village for a week and they brought all their frozen stuff to mine in Hertfordshire. We drove back to Suffolk separately and I wrote off my car on the roundabout at Fourwentways.
I stood in the road and waved at them as they drove past 5 minutes later. When we caught up at their place some hours later my father admitted he'd "seen some bloke at the side of the road but thought he was a drunk!"

Their previous boat went ashore at Aldeburgh, but being a graceful lady parked herself neatly against the seawall, with only a slight angle of heel. More than could be said for the small GRP motorboat just visible smashed into the saltings under her 3ton lead keel.

Hi Rog,
Glad to see something(posting) keeping you busy in your retirement.
Hows the old barge?

Interesting that Mr Matthews thinks the time is right for a price hike at Foxs. Or is it the non-domestic rates biting into margins?

Drove past Oyster house on way to Colchester RUFC the other weekend ( we lost)-quite a setup.

John.

John.

he has 7 boats in the marina so that will cost him

The ashtrays permanently full then?

He certainly unloaded Oyster yachts at the right time, and got into agricultural land before the huge recent land price rises.

Very decent of them to come mob-handed. Although what else would you expect from the "South of the river" blokes.
Wasn't "Shaula" very badly damaged, and never quite the same racing-wise subsequently?
She looks very trim now of course.

I was at sea off Portland Bill that night, in Ark Royal! I took over as Office of the Watch at 0400, the worst had gone through but still loads of wind and sea. Had to stand off a Type 42 that was giving a lee to a sailing cat.

Quite an interesting night. Pompey looked quite different sailing in a couple of days later with trees uprooted and roofs off. Got home to find the garden fence piled up in a corner! :D

Not a sailing story

Will never forget that day as we moved house from one side of Burnham to the other. Managed to get the hired van OK through the debris on the streets and started filling it up. As there was no electricity the banks couldn't transfer the money so we couldn't move into our new house. The people moving into ours were hassling us and were not too pleased about the tiles which had come off our roof. As the house we were moving into was empty and we knew the estate agent he eventually let us have the keys and we got moved in about 6.00pm, the lights came on about 6.30 so we could start getting sorted out. The money got transferred the next day.
This is a very brief summary of a totally stressful day!

Woke with it blowing a hoolie, looked out of the window, saw a ferry, obviously Hengist or Horsa where it should not have been, over Copt Point, no power so I felt my way to ring 999 - coastguard and reported a ship in trouble off Folkestone they replied that they knew about a freighter off the Warren, I said, 'This is no freighter, it's a Cross Channel Ferry!' Oh!
I was down in the Warren when the Hengist first touched the Apron around 0500, by this time a fireman was making his way across the Apron on all fours with a rope, but as this was now high tide and the ferry was ashore, nothing to be done at that stage.
