I wish to power my S/L anchor winch with a 240v motor (plenty of power on board) The gypsy has a half inch chain and 15lbs CQR (will not reduce chain as boat 30 ton)

Already had pulley fitted to rope drum. Any idea of hp required etc? Would 3 hp be enough?

That is a very small anchor for that size boat. I have a 1000w lofrans for 10mm chain and 16 kg delta, but a 700w motor would have sufficed, and that is on a 4 ton multihull.

If you really want a more powerful system, recommend that you use your 240v to power a hydraulic motor, and use hydraulics to power the windlass.

If you are seriously going to use 240 volts, use an isolating transformer 1:1 as a safety precaution. Most 12/24 volt windlass motors are about 700-100 watts, so a similar motor should draw 3-4 amps at 240 volts. A 3 HP motor would be well over the top - equivalent to 12-14 amps

Err, is this a wind up? 15lb CQR on a 30 ton boat? Or is it just a typo?

Half inch chain suggests it's not a 3 ton boat, 240V up at the wet end suggests you need to go back to basics.

The typical AC motor you could cheaply get for this job would be a single phase induction motor. This style has relatively poor torque characteristics at low speed (it's best torque is near operating speed 2850 RPM)compared with a DC series motor (typical winch motor) which has very high torque at low speed with the ability to run at high speed when the load eases. This characteristic is ideal for a winch and I would suggest AC to a battery charger to battery to DC winch as your best option if not hydraulic winch. regards will
