22ft teal rebuild

Hi all I have a 22FT 1970s teal inland cruiser shell that i am rebuilding, has anyone got any pics and info on what the interior of these looked like as I cannot find any info anywhere. I would also like to know if I need to put the floor in first or the bulkheads and new transom and then the floor? I will post some pics of it as the project goes on and I am open to all sensible comments and criticisms.

With regard to the order of fitting bulkheads and cabin sole (floor), I would expect the bulkheads and transom to come first as these are structural and need to be bonded to the hull. The cabin sole is usually removable to give access to the bilges. It is usually laid on bearers and either left loose or screwed down so that it does not float out if the boat is swamped, although that is not likely to be a consideration for inland waterways.

Hi Dave
Thanks for your quick response and your pics and info, I feel like a complete newbie and would have probably started the project a**e about face. Whilst I have your attention do you have any advice on whether to paint the old gelcoat or if there is a suitable replacement product on the market to restore some life to the faded cabin exterior? I have posted a pic of the exterior of the boat (don't laugh!!) as you can see she is in a sorry state at the moment.

Would have thought the transom would be your first move,if bonding in a "new" one make sure the boat is square and you are not building in a set to the boat because it is sitting on its supports at some odd angle.
Interesting decision will be what engine ?

Hi thanks for the brochure I now have an idea of the interior layout and will probably use this as a template in the future, as to the engine I think it will be an 9.9 outboard as it will be used for inland waterways and not coastal work however I am still wondering what to do with the gelcoat as it is buggered in some places and will need to be repaired. Can you recommend a suitable top coating with a smooth finish or is paint the way to go?

Due to value of boat your best course may be just tidy up surface of hull and paint with a decent twin pack paint.
With care a pretty decent finish can be achieved even by paint brush !

Hi saw your post and wonered if you could help.
I bought a 22ft teal it leans slichtly to starboard and is extremely difficult to steer, all the over boaters in the mkarins advise that this is caused by a ballast problem but boatyard advise that ballast is never required on a 22ft cabin cruiser?
The previous owner made changes to the interior so that there is nothing inside the boat apart from two cupboards.
Should I try ballast? if so where is the best place for it? beneath cockpiut or in the bow or, both?
bopat has a 15hp johnson engine.
Also when I purchased this boat it was on a trailer I had it put in the water and it sits very high in the water and it is obvious by the little moss on the hull that it is opprox 10 inches higher in the water than it was before he made changes to the interior.
This is my firsty boat so your advice would be very much appreciated. Thankyou

Not quite the same, but lots if useful information... including blasting 20 odd foot cabin cruisers... just search. They nearly all appear to benefit from a bag of gravel up front.

Ballesting such boats was very common, really the only way to balence up such a small boat for slow speed river use, improves the handling massively.
Half a tonne should do it

The best paint I have come across for tidying up the inside is Jotun two pack (buy from a specialist and by the right sort). I refitted a Harley 25 and the raw inside of that looks great after a coat of paint. Much of that is now covered in carpet and vinyl however!
