Dear All. Please advise on 21ft boats that are capable of planning (preferably with some cabin facility). Likely to be single handed most of time, so also interetsed in how they handle without kite up. Thanks

I presume you mean sailboats, as you mention kites. My 21' planes at 44knts, but it's got a 200HP sterndrive, which helps a bit, and has cabin too.

I reckon the concept of planing a 21ft keel sail boat is all a matter of degrees. I don't think you could ever get to the stage of dramatic lift out of the water with increase in speed like you can with an aluminium dinghy and motor.
Any decent sailboat that is designed for reasonable non planing performance ie roundish bottom and cut away (upward) stern to transom (all designed for minimum drag at low speed) will have difficulties getting on to a real plane.
The only way to get a true plane is with a flat bottom and light weight all of which are not suitable for a balasted keel boat.
Now I have heard people claim that their keel boats have planed. Certainly they can get an acceleration on a wave slope (surfing) that is dramatic. In the case of my own 21fter above about 9 knots the bow wave moves back near the keel and one might be tempted to say it was planing.
Maybe that is what you have in mind. That sort of speed can only be acheived in strong winds perhaps more often under spinnacker when the whole operation is decidedly dicey. A broach or round up is very likely and it can only be sustained for a few minutes before any sane person would lose ther nerve and reduce sail.
I am talking here of keel boats. Obviously there are many dinghies that plane easily but I don't think that is what you mean. Just try to find the fastest boat that will suit you and be satisfied. PS my type is peculiar to Oz but it does go well if very hard work to sail. regards olewill

I must admit I'm not sure of keel boats that small that will get up and go....maybe an Isis (but no cabin) but I've certainly been in a few keel boats that will stay on the plane, you could try these Open 30, Melges, Mumm 30's, Cork 1720, Hunter 707. But they are all in the 24-30ft range.

In the open 30 the speed used to get to 17knots then drop, then we found out the paddle was at that stage out of the water just in front of the keel.

If you want speed at that size - you are looking at Dragonfly 600 or even a hobie 21ft, but neither have a cabin, although IIRC they are both trailerable. If you are happy to go a bit higher, then the Dragonfly 800 or the F27 would both meet your criteria with ease.

Also the Bull 7000, but that is 24ft too. I raced on one for a few years and on windy days we got 13 knots regularly and 17 once. The owner used to cruise her to Normandy but said she felt very small in the middle of the channel.

Well it has to be a mini transat I guess.

Have been looking for similar size boats as I want to upgrade from dinghy sailing. I want fairly sporty sailing with the ability to overnight. Am deciding myself between a Jeanneau Sun 2000 and Sun 2500. Supposedly the hull design is based on the mini transat. I have had a Sun 2500 for a week and it was a blast.

The Hawk 20 website claims they have developed one with a lid. Whether it will plane I don't know. hawk20.co.uk

I have seen it written that the Scruffie Secret planes, (for a traditional look and a self build option) Check out whisperboats.co.uk

Re: 21footers (& below) that plane..?

Lots of sailing boats can now exceed their displacement hull speed, including the ones that Tigawave mentions. They need fairly broad and flatish rear hull sections to do it and usually need the kite up. Any 21ft boat going 9 knots is exceeding the normal displacement hull speed. I believe that the beneteau 21 and Jeanneau will both just about plane with a kite as will our 20 footer and 24 footer.
