20w-50 v 15w-40

Can 20-50 be used in place of the recommended 15- 40 for my Beta 20hp. Its the only one I can seem to find with the spec. API cc.

The only difference will be very slightly slower cold cranking RPM. So unless it is a really reluctant cold starter she will be fine.

There must be a Tesco, Asda, Halfords or something like them in Devon. They all sell 15W40 Mineral oil.

i posted a thread a while back as i had some 15-40 mineral oil with a newer spec. lots of debate on the forum about the very latest specs being for more modern engines and not suitable for marine diesels. eventually got a reply from beta that said a 15-40 of the new spec mineral oil would be fine. as long as its mineral oil not semi-synthetic or synthetic

Morris Oils will have what you want. Better prices on Ebay than direct though.

I would be amazed if you can't find the oil your after in a port city like Plymouth. Find your local Oil wholesaler and ask them.
It is often easier to ask the manufacturer (Beta) for a recomened brand name. Every oil manufacturer will offer a direct replacement. Shell Rimula 15w /40 is a fairly common oil for many industrial and marine engines.
