Website is a bit naff but service, terms and price are good. Are perfectly willing to accommodate special requests.

That's good to hear. Our new boat is with them, but my dad arranged it and I had no idea whether they were any good.

I do need to talk to them about their rules on single-handed sailing. Their terms have a somewhat vague sentence saying it's not permitted "overnight". Does that mean for a whole night evening to morning, or for any time at night (for example arriving into an anchorage at midnight). And regardless, what's the least restrictive term I can get them to agree :).

(Not asking for other posters' interpretations of this term, it's the insurers I need to talk to.)

Yes, it states... "Warranted that no single-handed overnight passages are undertaken." I've understood that to mean as long as I don't sail all night, ie dusk till dawn, I'm OK. If you find out differently, please come back.

At the cheap and cheerful end of the spectrum I found the quotes for my Hurley 22 to be much-a-muchness. Ended up with Yachtline as they were prompt and helpful when replying to emails and had good cover for the price. I scribbled down each quote I got - here - so I could make another comparison next year.

I've drafted an email asking them to consider removing the restriction altogether, and if they won't, to adopt one of the other common approaches used such as an increased excess or a maximum planned passage duration, or if they won't do that, at least clarify what the term means more precisely :)

Can't send it till I've found out the policy number etc which is at home.

I'll try to remember to post the gist of their response.

Panteanius have just kept my insurance at the same price for the 3rd year in a row. Very happy with the price and with excellent solo sailing, night, cruising area and racing clauses. Give them a call they are very helpful.

I use Bishop Skinner [RYA member discount], but had a similar single handed term in the cover. This year I shopped around for increased cruising range and less restricted single handed sailing. When I talked to them, they were able to do all that within the original renewal they had quoted me, so I stayed with them. The single handed clause they offered only restricts me to single handed passages less than 24 hours, which suits me. One other firm that looked interesting amongst the ones I checked was Yachting24.

Some of the others had very odd cruising range and single handed clauses.

Echo rgarside's experience of single-handed cover with Bishop Skinner, and not least the benefits of staying with someone you know (and knows you), competitive cost permitting. I've been with them now for 10 years and have had single-handed cover for passages approaching 1000miles.
