We went in last weekend at half tide on the flood and taking a line from the Weir bouy at about 0 degrees (sorry chart etc on the boat) to close the shoreline we crossed what I assume to be an extension of the South shoal with a depth of 2.1M further up the river where the incomming tide washes over the outer bank at North Weir Point the depth as we hugged the shoreline was again in the order of 2M for a short period perhaps 10 to 20 Meters it seemed longer. The tide at North Weir Point was 4 to 5 knots. We left Orford Quay about 2Hrs after low water arriving at the entrance again at about half tide finding conditions much the same.

The shallow patch near the beacon always made entering the Ore more worring then the Deben, mainly because the strength of the tide resulted in a near 10 knot SOG with little opportunity to slow down.

Sounds like it is still there this year.

Thanks very much - this will help me avoid making another embarrassing incident on the bar.

As far as I can tell, the closer you keep to the shore the better (though not so close that you are shaking hands with the dog walkers!)
