Hi all ,have you seen March PBO it shows the International Paint antifouling competition results, the east coast area represented by our own forumite Jim Drew who antifouled his boat (Full Circle) with freeby Micron Extra in April 2010, good write up by Jim regarding the Crouch area the Micron performed well and he would recommend it.

Six other boats took part in the trials/competition from different areas in the UK all used International Antifouling, but varied types ie Micron/Uno/Optima/surprisingly all owners had
good results and the general view was that they would use them again.

I have never used Internationl Antifouling but judging by the above results it seems I should, but I have also had not so complimentary comments regarding these Antifoulings from boat owner friends, so have they put a magic ingredient into the 2010 paints or was the marine conditions just right at the right time?

PS Jim are you using it this year?

Ooh, havent seen that yet.
A quick look around my bottom would say that I put so much on last year, that an inspection has shown that I need not do a full coat this year, will just do the leading edges, round the waterline and possibly the vertical rudder surfaces, as these had slime on them. I possibly got a bit carried away jet washing it mid season. Very few barnacles.
Even the prop looked OK-ish, with an early coat of Trilux and then Micron Extra mid season.
Should be able to do that with the last of the free stuff from 2010.

Anodes have also lasted well, and will leave them alone this year too.

Thing is though, I think the Flag Performance Extra did just as well, and Barry at Dauntless has that for 50 quid, rather than the 80 quid for Micron.

antifoul test

Hi Jim, thanks for the info , at present Iam removing the old antifouling was going to use Jotun seaguard says it give 2/3 seasons of protection, also priced coppercoat but just ordered new mainsail and genoa so all the funds are now spent! might give barry a visit once I can see the gelcoat, many more hours of scrapping before that is achieved.

I used Jotun Sea Queen which seemed ok - weed on the waterline when I didnt use the boat much in July & August but not much else. Got enough left on the boat and a bit in the tin so think I may do same as Jim - water line / leading edges.

I think it was a good year for light fouling - well it was for me on Tiger Xtra. Jim has been heard to say that any old rubbish is as useless as any other old rubbish. Perhaps the use of something decent has taught him otherwise :)

Not so. I always said that Flag Ordinaire is not good, but very cheap, which is why I used Flag Performance Extra (and have 10 litres in stock at the moment).
I do rail at their general performance however. I am sadly disappointed that there isn't a halo of dead stuff on the river bottom surrounding my boat mooring. :D

As said in other posts, we use Jotun and have done for as long as we've had boats on the Orwell.
I see no reason why three years wouldn't be achieved as we have done two and a half.

We buy in bulk (20l plus) at a very low price. :o

I put two coats of Micron extra on two years ago. Anything that was on there succumbed to the marina's jet wash... Even the things such as the prop and plastic transducers that weren't Auntie Flo'ed.

With 500+ boats all leaching various biocides and heavy metals into the water, its not unusual have fish floating belly up in the marina.

I use whatever Dauntless has cheap and apply just one coat. I can't remember what I had last season but it lasted fine on a drying mooring up in Hullbridge where all the nutrients are fresh and had virtually no barnacles or fouling, just a little wipe off weed on waterline. I don't do a mid season scrub or spray off, either..

The prop had just one spray of cheap motorcycle chain lube on launching and one mid season and was pretty clear at the end of season.

Seajet antifoul

Used Seajet antifoul last season.
No weed, just a little slime on water line.
We dry out up the Blackwater on our swing moorings.
Must say had a few barnies on bottom, but nothing to bad.
Will use Seajet again,
Seems ideal for dry out mud births...:):)

As one manufacturer supplied all the antifoul it sdoens't seem much of a test. Who knows how the others would have compared? I feel a letter to PBO coming on!

Excellent test. I am not at all swayed by the thought of 10 litres of free antifoul turning up.

So, normally I put on about 3 tins a year. However, I put it on so thick that this year, I will only do the waterline and leading edges.

Thus preserving my stock of Flag Performance Extra until March 2012.

Hurrah.
