Does anyone know anything about these lumps, are they any good, known problems etc?

Could be quite old engines, mebbe 20+ years.

I'm told they're most definitely V6, probably pretty old. Wot are yours like, reliable, frugal/thirsty, parts cheap/expensive?

The basic lump is bomb proof... if I can't break it, no-one can! Noisy smelly and smokey, but the best sound you can buy! Nothing in my mind is as sweet sounding as a V8 diesel..

Parts are reasonable provided you spend time sourcing them, after all GM probably built more diesels than any Uro manufacturer. Fuel consumption I would say is middle of the road.

There should be at least three DD V6 diesels.... 6V-53, 6V-71 and 6V-92 ... all with N, & T and possibly TA's (Naturally Aspirated, Turbo and Turbo&Aftercooler). The 53N should be 165 hk upwards in standard outfit, with Turbo probably up to about 300, depending of choice of injectors . Then the difficult issue ... it could be older than these lumps, but is most likely the 53 ... or perhaps even the 71 .... the 92 series got 400 BHP + and a bit highly strung... all 2 stroke diesels and very reliable. High weight high torque and low rev. .... good workhorses, smooth runners & great sounding. Highly tuneable both up and down as injector change means tune / detune. Lot's are de-tuned, for heavy industrial use, which is good for reliability. Relatively cheap parts and should be relatively easy to work on.

Get engine serial no and call your local DD dealer, who will in turn give you the performance chart, fuel consumption graph and where the engine was delivered when and what marine gear the engine was delivered with ... all for free ... I know, because i did that with something I looked at....

Or you could do what I did and contacted my local dealer and service agent, Turner Diesel in Aberdeen - 01224 723925 and ask for the Service Department for DD's.

Good luck...

< ....mine is the classic V8 truck engine, fresh water cooled....>
Guess that is the engine manufactured for the trucks and later modified for the GMC 4WD ... relatively high reving at 4K ish... and 4 stroke..... Sort of could not see the 2-stroke V8 71's in the stern of your boat .... @ 1,420 Kg they may be a bit heavy
