Don't worry Mon, dis does be de Windies, yuh really expect them to have a LIST of CONFIRMED entries already????

Don't worry, I am sure lots of lovely yachts will be signing up soon - a sight to behold for sure seeing them racing, especially if the J Boats and the big gaff schooners like Mariette and Eleanora are taking part.

Last time I was there for Classics was 3 years ago, sailing in the tall ships division on the TSYT brig Stavros Niarchos which was brilliant - like with all Windie regattas, the sailing is the easy bit - negotiating the rum shops and parties ashore is far more lethal (and probable...) than the risk of running aground.

I won't be attending this year /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, but we shall definitely be off on sailabout next year, with Antigua Classics on the passage plan, and a stop in Martinique first to stock up on some nice froggy food and wine boxes of vin ordinaire.

Lots of lovely photos of fine vessels at previous Antigua bashes at www.photoaction.com. I think Den Phillips and Beken can also usually find excuses to abscond south then...... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Love it!! That's exactly how it is, completely laid back and quite unlike the high tech super racing yachts that follow it a couple of weeks later.

I have many fabulous memories of the 2003 event when I was helping out the race committee in the Antigua Yacht Club. One day my job was on the desk booking each yacht in and dealing with the various entry forms etc etc.

I could see Valsheda down below on the water, but she hadn't registered and the deadline was fast running out. Unsure of what to do, I asked the other people there. 'Call 'em on the VHF and tell 'em to get up here' they said.

So, I had the great fun of calling up Valsheda's skipper (a great guy BTW) and telling him that unless he was in the office with in 5 minutes, they would be excluded from the Regatta!! Three minutes later a flustered, but grinning skipper shot through the door and thrust the papers into my hand!

We weren't serious about excluding such a wonderful yacht of course, but it did bring home to me the truly fantastic fun attitude that goes right through the Classics, irrespsective of size or cost of these beautiful boats. I mean, has anything more lovely than Concordia under full sail been on the water?!! And they threw a terrific party on board too a few days later.

Wonderful memories of lovely people AND, sailing on a South African friend's 28 foot gaff cutter, we also won our class - and THAT party was unbelievable!!

Reminds me of a Lenny Henry sketch. Approaching aircraft radios Jamaica airport for permission to land. Gets a recorded message.

"Hey man, dis IS Jamaica Airport. We is all chillin at de beach. You jis lan de big ol silver bird if you don't see nuttin on de runway."

Hello Everyone Don''t worry we have 9 entries and about 35 possible entries at this time. What we don't have is a web site operator.

Kenny, I hope that Cora will be taking part again this year!

For all you Forumites who havent been to Antigua Classics before, Cora is an extremely pretty Harrison Butler who is maintained to concours standard by her proud owners who invariably mop up all the opposition with ease.
Have a look for her in the results tables on the Classics website, or at Tim Wright's excellent photos of her at www.photoaction.com.

Cora might not be ready as she is haveing some new floor timbers installed, and then the interior, but we will see if the wood ever gets here.

Even though she has never won her class she does finish within the time limit on the light wind years.

This year we are having a good Vintage Class with Mariette, Sumurun, Belle Aventure, Ticonderoga, When and If, Charm III, Mariella. The J boats have all gone off to Valencia, and the other big schooners are haveing refits. Two new J boats being built, so the new years will be fantastic.
