Does anyone know how to check the steering motor fluid level on 2004 Antares series 9?

There is a bolt on top of the steering motor but can’t see a dipstick anywhere.

Steering is very stiff and squeaks a little at the wheel.

Thanks in advance

If the rudder moves when you turn the wheel there is some oil in there. If there was no oil it may squeak but it will not be stiff.

Try disconnecting the ram from the steering arm on the rudder stock. Is the steering still stiff when you turn the wheel? Can you operate the rudder by hand using the steering arm on the rudder stock with the ram disconnected?

Thank you for the swift answer. Steering works fine with and without the tiller. Is just very stiff. Also checking the hydraulic pipes from the pump there is evidence of oil. I’m assuming the bolt on the top of the pump is a top off bolt but am hesitant to open it!

Then you have eliminated any problem with the rudder bearings. The screw head on the top of the motor almost certainly is the oil filler plug. Normally the oil level is nearly full, not quite, to allow a small air pocket for expansion and, with the plug out turn wheel gently fully L and R to force out any air bubbles in the system. To be sure, look for the manual for your specific online.
