True, but take the head off? Only if there's a cranking problem, surely - not indicated in this post.

There is the well known problem of the gearbox splines, well documented by Westerly & Beneteau owners, but don't forget another gearbox problem which might be equally or even more potentially disastrous - complete loss of drive as a result of "glazing" of the disc/cone assembly which runs up & down the helically cut vertical shaft within the gearbox...This can happen progressively or suddenly, I understand, although in our case it was progressive loss of reverse. There is, of course, a VP mod - a replacement disc/cone with self-grinding faces which is supposed to "remove" the problem, at some cost - cheaper than a replacement gearbox...just!

The injectors sit in copper tubes and can be stubborn to shift. If you disturb the tube it's a head-off job to fit a new one with a special tool needed. Drain the engine cooling system as low as you can before pulling the injectors as it's the copper tube that keeps the sea out of the cylinders. That way, if you have the misfortune to disturb one, it'll limit the damage.

Injectors are straightforward to recon, but if you don't absolutely have too disturb the three injector pumps don't touch 'em - they are EXPENSIVE to recon and are what look like gaskets are shims to a give very precise clearance which is different for each pump. If you do have to, make sure you keep the shims in place on the engine mark which pump goes where permanently - a punch or something. I used a felt marker and the first thing Lucas in Southampton did was put 'em in a bowl of paint stripper. The next thing they did was assemble them backwards so they didn't work. Panda Diesels in Fareham figured that one out and fixed 'em for not a lot, so guess who I'll be going back to if I need more work doing.

Idiot question:

I've tried to find the serial number on my 2002 but can't find any 10 digit numbers. What I do have on the little plate is a 6 digit (iirc) number prefixed with 'fl' (this is also what the surveyor took to be the serial number). Did they change the format of the numbers at any point in time?
