Have been trying to replace the engine anode in a Volvo 2002. Any tips on how to get the 'fitting' out of the block. I am worried that I may just round off the square head or shear it off!!
Many thanks

I have a 2003, don,t know if the anodes are the same. Mine is a square headed bit hidden behind the alternator. Anyway, one of the sockets in my socket set is a nice snug fit on the square part, never had any problems. Sorry cannot remember which size socket, but I think it is a metric one.

Square socket ?

I thought it was fitted to the cylinder head anyway?

its a half inch male square, same as you bit worried about snapping it off. Use a good quality 1/2 inch extension and if possible weld a old socket over the male end and you have a nice tool, if you look on line there a plenty for sale but evil prices, when I looked there were £40 ish. they are used a lot on agricultural machines. mine went with a right crack when I done mine was scared to look at first. glad I done it as all was left was a goo on the plug. key parts have the plug for a tenner I think.

I've just been through this for the first time. The method of removal depends on the state of the 1/2" square of the anode holder and the tightness of the fit of the holder into the engine.

If you are very lucky, the 1/2" socket extension is the answer (as mentioned in earlier post).
If the square on the holder is only partly rounded, you may get away a 9/16 ring spanner (it won't fit a pristine square)
Next worse situation ; you could try Moles, Stilsons or a tap spanner (and probably fail).
If you are still in trouble the it is Irwin Bolt grips. They are simply wonderful, very effective and hugely expensive.

When, at last, you succeed, be prepared for a large volume of water.

Note that the anode holder screws into the anode not the other way round. This means that the anode crud can stick in the hole while the plug keeps on coming. It is necessary therefore to just clear the holder thread from the engine then pull the anode remains out.

When re-assembling, use a new holder and anode. Never use plumber's tape between the anode and the holder as this electrically isolates the anode and stops the anode working.

A photo might help (ignore the impellers).

Good luck
Bob

I use a 15mm socket on mine. Top tip if you think it's going to "round" try tightening it a little first before unscrewing.
