That's about as close as I can get to an accurate description.

Problem with the starter. Seems to engage for a moment, which nudges the engine, but although the starter continues to spin, the engine does not. Importantly, if the decompressor is operated, the engine continues to turn, very slowly, the starter still running at high speed.

My guess, the spur gear on the starter is very worn, and forcing itself out of proper engagement, but still trying to re-engage, the friction is turning the ring gear.

Might this make sense?

Take it off and have a look! Its only 2 bolts. You might just find its either rusty, dirty, or the spring has broken and is jamming it. Obviously its only partially engaging and with no resistance will turn it over but any resistance throws it out. Not uncommon.

if you dont its a ring gear which means taking the flywheel off

Not my boat, and there were no tools <u>whatsoever</u> on board, otherwise I would have done. Just wanted some ideas so that I can persuade the owner that it is not the fault of the fitter who serviced it, and was the last person to touch the starter key before yesterday. He (the owner) is in attack mode.

Maybe a bit like the ex. If she had her car serviced, expected it to be also immune from punctures. Touching faith in the ability of mechanics to make things immortal.
