Been looking for a 20 mm shaft anode - can't get one anywhere in Dublin: are 20 mm shafts so unusual? I got one at the local chandlers last year but he tells me he can't get them any more, and the others never keept them. I could go to Anodes Direct or similar, but the price of postage on top is galling. The engine, gearbox, shaft and prop were new in 2012, so it's not like its some sort of dinosaur shaft.......

20mm shafts belong well in the past as your boat probably only had a Petter mini 6 originally which had so little power it did not need bigger. Ideally it should have been changed with your new engine as it is a bit marginal, but it is big job as the stern tube and P bracket have to be changed as well as the shafted, seal and prop.

If I can get some sort of 20 mm stone for the drill, I can put a cardboard shim between the halves and bore out to 20 mm. Bit of a faff though. So I'm guessing that when they put in the new shaft, they stayed with 20 mm to avoid changing anything else?

Proper shaft anodes have steel liners so that they clamp hard on the shaft and don't go loose as the zinc erodes. Difficult to bore accurately from 19mm to 20mm. Better to get the proper thing.

Yes, I've taken that view - bought a couple to save on next years postage......... I've just discovered Parcel Motel - where I can ship to a UK address at UK postage (if not free) and pay €4.95 to get to the Parcel Motel near my house. Ofttimes, the postage to Ireland is more than the cost of the goods........

My boat, Spring 25, has 20mm propshaft. The previous owners found the best way round the scarcity of 20mm anodes was to fit the much commoner 22mm. That was probably a bit loose. However putting a few turns of electricians tape round the shaft first tightened things up nicely. It also had the advantage[?] of stopping the anode from wearing out too quickly!. A win win until the propellor fell off shortly after I bought it.

:o Yep, just like using string instead of copper wire for - it's much much safer! :)
