20 litres of Diesel in Water Tank

Hello - posting on behalf of my Father (Bob) who doesn't have internet signal at present.

He's currently at a marina where unfortunately the chap refuelling chose the water tank instead of the Diesel tank and put ~20 litres of Diesel into the tank.

Bob is currently flushing the tank back out of the water intake (i.e. it's overflowing onto the deck) and has added Fairy Liquid to the mix to help - he hasn't run any taps etc.

He can see that the patches of Diesel are getting smaller and smaller but he's concerned about the residual diesel in the system.

Do you have any tips / experience on how to best fix this?

Thank you so much!

Alex

What are the capacity of the tank and how empty was it?

I wonder if any diesel got into the domestic pipework? Might be worth flushing it out every which way.

Welcome to the forums!

Wasn't your father in attendance at the time? Didn't he notice what was happening? He'll need to do lots of rinsing and cleaning.

I would tend to tell whoever filled the wrong tank to sort it out. If it’s an employee of the marina then advise the start of legal action to recover any financial loss and see what their response is.

Are you telling us that he has flushed 20 litres of diesel out of the filler and overboard? Seriously expensive error if caught

Yep, that would be considered a serious pollution incident (anything over 10l) and the potential fines are very high plus the culprit is liable for all the costs incurred by the responding authorities, contractors etc.

If it had been me, I'd have politely (in the first instance) but firmly have asked the marina what they were going to do to correct their mistake

From where he's at now, i don't fancy his chances of ever entirely getting rid of the taint of diesel in the water. Maybe after flushing dozens of times but maybe not ever (it's very persistent!). Worst case is having to replace the tank

I'm amazed that anyone with an ounce of sense could do this unless the operator had no sense of smell. It is obvious when one removes the filler cap from the diesel tank that it is a diesel tank ..... or not.

And if it was an unlocked unlabelled filler, unsupervised? Whose fault is that?

There are more questions than answers and we are stuck with pictures in our minds that will not show.
I can see clearly now that the OP should enlighten us so we dont need to ask the question time and time again.
