2 yachts aground on the Deben bar in 20 mins

You are indeed a generous man, sailorman; yep I know JW is present HM, he and his family have lived at the Ferry since as long as I can remember; as an aside though, I (we) went to the same local school for a while and used to rake over the sandbank for shells and clay pipes, in (good ole) the days gone by :)
Mind you though, in those far off days, some of the Yachts on the Deben were much larger than possibly now, they had crews (paid) and wore white trousers and caps.
The Ferry Boat transported Aircraftsmen to and fro Bawdsey for the Manor and the foreshore on Bawdsey side was barbwire off for National Security.
Oh and the Deben entrance was very different over the times, at one time there was a way in over on Bawdsey side.
A Uncle used to lay Crab /Lobster pots in the entrance, a very good place so to fish :)
So you must have known John`s FiL

Witnessed a very nasty grounding this afternoon. Approx 35ft classic looking yacht entering a couple of hours after low (plenty of water, more than last time we came in 2.5 hours before high). They appeared to follow the line from the Haven to the red, but then just kept heading west - not slightly off course, just completely wrong. I was on the sea wall, if I'd had my 'phone with me I would have called the harbour master to tell him he had a customer before they went on. And boy did they go on - almost on their beam ends in 18" of water with waves breaking over them. Attended by the volunteer coastguard, harbour masters launch, a rib, the Deben Ferry and another launch. The Deben Ferry pulled them off (suffering some damage in the process). They motored in under their own steam so obviously OK but it looked horrible. The Deben Ferry skipper was not impressed. He'd been out at LW and said there was 5' in the channel then. How they ignored the nav marks and went so far off is a mystery - you could see waves breaking in front of them before they went on.
