2 or 4 stroke aux outboard? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
i have a shetland hobby with a mariner 50 hp 2 stroke one the back so i want a 5 hp aux

Re: 2 or 4 stroke aux outboard

I would go for a 2 stroke ,they are generally lighter easier to maintain but louder. The extra decibels wont be an issue if its only serving as a back up engine.

Re: 2 or 4 stroke aux outboard

There is an argument in favour of low-hours two strokes.

As an example... A four stroke version will need to have an oil change and therefor oil disposal regardless of whether it gets used, wheras most twos are happy to left alone until needed.

Probably need to bow to your knowledge of these things but having seen the 2 stroke "washout" tank at our local specialists, I opted for 5hp 4 stroke and have been totally happy. What is the EU future regarding sales of new 2 strokes?

Bizarrely and against all environmental considerations only commercial, therefore high, users are now allowed to have them imported.

As for your local engineer's tank, the only time that sees an engine is when one is being run so it is probably not a true indication of dormant behaviour as seen with most auxiliaries.

Would not agree there as we have noted many 4st's being harsher and louder than many 2st's seen in harbours.
As to original post, agree with others, go for 2st.
Trouble is that good second-hand 2st's will get more expensive as they get rarer. People will also hang onto theirs longer than previously. I wonder why ? !

Yep, I agree - small two strokes definitely not as harsh as the lawn mower noise of high revs on a single cylinder four. Surprising easy to get a new two stroke - there are ways and means .... :)
