2 letter code Sierra November

I've never been able to figure how Nelson sent "England expects ... " Was there a lot of flags? Several flag halyards? I feel sure that someone (many people?) here must know.

The signal book was of course the reason the word "expects" was used in place of his intended signal which was "confides". You could pop down to HMNB and have a look they (at least used to) have the signal flying on Victory IIRC.

Here you are:

I remember whilst being on the Beira Patrol one ship insisted that all communication was by flags using the 2 letter codes. Took ages as you are only supposed to hoist one message at a time.
I would be interested to know which ship and which year.? Maybe our paths crossed a very long time ago.

Guess what they had a code book too, partly to disguise the meaning of their signals from the enemy but also to allow long complex messages to be sent with the minimum number of flags

HMS Troubridge 27th Escort Squadron February to July 1966

You are CPO Pertwee and I claim my £5 :)

Apparently the scripwriters of the Navy Lark knew (or were related to?) the skipper of Troubridge who used to write to let them know some of the things his crew got up to, which were duly used in the storylines (hence the name of HMS Troutbridge).

Oh dear, I guess no air conditioning?
My Beira Patrol was 1971. Afterwards we docked at Simonstown and I flew to Rhodesia to see my uncle for a couple of weeks. They were short of nothing and thought the Patrol was a joke..... Hey Ho.

The Navy Lark/Embassy Lark team were regular visitors to the ship when we were in the UK and I met most of the cast.

Simonstown was a NO NO for us. We did have partial aircon, the Wardroom and the messes were not to bad but the cabin in the lower cabin flat didn;t fare so well. We did board one ship to no avail and left just before the Joanna V came out. Mombasa was OK though.

How do the boys in the Solent contact the coastguard for a flag check before leaving the marina?

Are there any code flags that they hoist for " Can i have a flag check please"

What sort of reply do they get for " weak but readable " etc etc
