I was left a little shell-shocked at what I found and the detail examination is still to be performed but at 1st glance it looks ok.

Can I/we assume relevant parts are not interchangeable between GM and YM engines?

I'm afraid they are not. Piston/conrod are same as 2YM15 and 3TNV70 aircooled non-marine donk.
