2 boats fallen over at Mercury marina

Word is that a van might have clipped a shore.

Unlikely, the shore that gave way was next to the other damaged boat, not enough room for a van to get between them

just goes to show that wooden poles used as shores are a single point of failure. To damage two boats by knocking out one shore looks like serious under-propping.

Steel cradles are not infallible. Some years ago at Hamble Point I was nearly killed by a Sigma 33 in a steel cradle whose bow was clipped by a lorry, the cradle leg distorted and as the boat fell over I managed to dodge out of the way of the mast and rig as it came down. Since that incident Hamble Point have only used 6 leg cradles.

sadly when a sailing boat falls with the mast up, the mast hitting the other boat does considerable damage to the first boat, likely irreparable. Shifts whole bulkheads.

Wooden shores are fine. Less of a single point of failure than a 4 leg metal cradle (obviously). They are labour intensive though, the boat move can pick the boat and cradle up with a metal cradle.

The only time I have seen a collapse is when the owner moved a shore onto epoxy that wasn't cured so was slippery.

Pro cleaning companies shouldn't move shores any more than owners. Only the yard should. They are insured.

Arrived at Mercury yesterday afternoon, both boats now blocked off and upright.

Masts off both boats, the larger of the 2 i. e the 1 that went over had a very badly damaged rudder. Would guess a new 1 is on order
