We were due to leave Savannah, GA when I returned from work this time. However, swmbo had an accident and snapped both tib & fib just above the ankle on Saturday night, stepping off a friends yacht. Pretty bad break by all accounts, and she has to see an orthopedic surgeon this morning to see if she requires surgery and pins etc, this morning. Anyhoo, she wont be climbing on & off the boat anytime soon, so I guess we are going to be stuck in the US for another year since hurricane season starts before she will be up & about. Bummer /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

at least at the current $/£ rate I should be able to get even more upgrades done. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
We may even get christmas in the Bahamas this year, or perhaps a log cabin in duelling banjo country. Didn't get a chance last year. We may be over to Bute in October, and might even book my YM practical for then too.

got the results back from the orthopaedic guru and it's not good. 3 breaks in the tibia requiring plating & screws and a full rod in the fibia from the knee to the ankle. Surgery tomorrow, and I am stuck out at sea. Still, we have some amazing friends out there whpo are with her and hopefully here sister will make it there tomorrow as well. Looks like I am going to be pushing a chair for a while. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

what not to do when stepping off a boat.

ouch
get well soon
always takes longer than the orthopod says to get back to full function so dont expect too much too soon and get as much physio in as poss after the metalwork removed.

Hi George,
Sorry to hear about Theresa's ankle, hope she gets well soon. Give her all our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
If you do get to Bute later in the year please give us a call, it would be great to see you both again.

Thanks Steve, good to hear from you, and as I hinted I may well be in touch anyway.

Thanks to all the others and I will pass on the good wishes. Unfortunately I cannot even be with her as I am stuck offshore at the moment, but she has her sister and a mass of great boating friends we have made there all rallying round her.

Will they remove the metalwork? I am not sure, but I think it will be a 'Beckham Boot' type of job to retain some muscle function while the lower limb is immobilised.
I think they want to start physio after 2 weeks. Orthopaedic gadgets are amazing, it's just a pity that ortho surgeons are so up themselves, however, no doubting their ability. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It made me cringe to see the xray, did the same myself a few years ago, main thing is dont do too much too soon, I did and now my leg is slightly bent at the ankle and about 6mm shorter than the other one, I have to have a built up shoe and I get back ache if I dont wear them, so be patient!

Will they remove the metalwork?

A friend had a very similar break a couple of years back, and they left all the metalwork in. They left the fib (? the back one) unpinned which was very painfull - you could hear it clicking and grating for ages. No cast though, and up standing on the leg pretty soon after
