1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

Thanks for all the advice and support everyone. I made good use of it and had a wonderful, if rather too exciting time last weekend.

Had a great sail out to Wootton, fought through what seemed like National Regatta Week in Chi Harbour.
Coming out of Wootton Sunday morning, an alarm sounded on the binnicle the engine was overheating and there was white smoke pouriong out of the exhaust. We hadn't put any sail up yet, so I cut the engine straight away and got the mainsail up to give us steerage and movement. Sent my (absolutely wonderful) crew down below to look at it whilst I helmed and planned what to do if we couldn't solve it. Had two plans in mind by the time he came back up with a nasty clump of wirey seaweed in his hand - problem solved! We carried on and had another great day's sailing.

Now, if that had happened a year ago, even if I was only crewing, I'd have been in a complete flap, so I was pleased that I stayed calm and thought it through.

I made a few mistakes over the weekend, but nothing serious. I'm really glad I did it, I've learned a lot and gained a bit of confidence and insight.

All the advice was much appreciated and very helpful, so thanks again.

I may even do it again...

Sue

Perhaps you had better try again?

Only joking - Well done, and may this be the beginning of a long career.

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

good bit of experience for you, nice one.
If anything like that happens again, delegate someone on the helm and go below with the salty type to go through the investigative process 'first hand' for yourself, see what's what where is that etc. logical breakdown of why this is/isnt doing?
I'm glad for you, glad you had a minor scrape, for out of disasters heroes are forged and all experience is valid lest it is forgotten. cook '05.
did the crew behave?
when you going out as guvna again?

Did the crew thank you for the weekend? - Good compliment

Like a passenger falling asleep in the passenger seat shows great trust in your driving!

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

I used to thank owners/skippers religiously, regardless of their (in)competence, the sentiment was not always intended to be appreciative, which was particularly felt by them when they knew they had f$ct up badly.

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

Well That's grand. Now you can have minor disasters without feeling it's all your fault.
I expect you're wondering what you were concerned about.
One of those defining moments.

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

I see your point, ghost, and it's a good one.
But I only had one crew, and, as he said afterwards, a skipper at the helm is better than one head down, arse up in the bilges! I did check out what he'd done to clear the blockage when we got back to the mooring.

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

Yes, he did, and we did have a lot of fun, great sailing and sunburnt faces at the end of it!

I'm so glad to have done it, and I think I'll be a better crew when Himself comes back next week.

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

Well done! So what are your thoughts about doing it again now that first time blues have blown over?

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

I wanna do it again! Not sure Himself will be that thrilled...he rather likes skippering himself.
And it could turn out like the two of us trying to decorate a room together. We soon found out that me, him, paint and rollers - absolutely to be avoided!

Re: 1st time skippering - I didn\'t kill anyone!!

Congrats and well done.

Now all you need to do is add sun-block to your skipper's list. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
