1st Channel Crossing as Skipper

Re: The Baan Thai - right then

Yes, but that was only to avoid payment even though I had generously endowed said naturalist with enough cash to pay for all.

Re: Racing with CYC?

Hi Bill
So you will be racing with CYC. I hope you win my fathers trophy 'The Cross Channel Plate'
Unfortunately my father pass away last August.
The best place I ever got was second, Chic to FECamp.
Good Luck! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi Woody

Plenty of good advice on here - we did it last September (I'm sure you remember) and it was my first time as skipper, and you were a fine crew. I'm sure you'll be OK. As it's a race though I would play it safer rather than taking too many risks on your first crossing as skipper - priority is to get there safely. If there are any problems don't be afraid to get on the radio. We are going over with the CYC cruise on the Saturday, so should see you there for a beer! When are you soming back?

Have a safe crossing - Les (Yanez)

Neptune passage planner suggests 209M if you're doing 6 knots and 207M if doing 5 knots from Bembridge ECM to Cherbourg East entrance. Don't suppose anyone can steer that accurately! (and it totally ignores wind direction & leeway).
[I accept no liability whatsoever for these courses!]

I've only ever managed to cross channel under sail all the way twice without Mrs Mate getting concerned that we might not be in time for dinner in a French retaurant. I'd hazard a guess your best bet will be to do a bit of preplanning along the lines of "from here, now, will I still be uptide when I get near Cherbourg"

Enjoy!

. . found the biggest problem was fatigue so would look in that area of how to minimise it and its effects.

I completely agree, although it seems you might be younger than me and thus less susceptible to that dreadful 'can't keep my eyes open' syndrome. I now carry ProPlus on board in the hope that if I'm ever caught like that again, I have at least some possible remedy.
Anyone got any better 'stay awake at all costs (for good reasons)' suggestions?
