1st Boat - Question re certs/licence etc

Hi, I'm looking at buying a little 25hp speedboat, do you need a river licence/safety certs to use on the river (River Trent) for the odd hour or so at the weekend?
I've asked a few people when calling about ones for sale but they say I need nothing, just put in the water and use it?

Any advice appreciated.

You do need a license to take the boat out on the river and you may also need a boat safety certificate and especially important insurance. Regardless of rules/regulations, you should seek some tuition from someone experienced beforehand.

Buy a day or week long licence. Download and complete the "self declaration" form https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/1196.pdf and get some insurance.

They're probably thinking about the sea, where you don't need anything by law although some instruction (whether formal or informal) and at least 3rd-party insurance would be sensible. On canals and rivers things are more regulated.
