Has anyone fitted a calorifier to a raw water cooled 1GM10? I have seen drawings of plumbing systems but am not convinced that the water would get hot enough. The water from my exhaust is at the best luke warm and Im not sure it would heat up even a small system. Anyone got any direct experience and how do I know if it will work before forking out loads of money? Cheers in advance.

A Yanmar agent at the boat show told me it was ineffective and that it was necessary to convert the engine to freshwater cooling. Yanmar do kits for this but it is a complex job and the kit itself was hideously expensive (to my mind anyway). I bought a stand alone diesel water instead.

We've got it on a 2GM20 ... but need to replace the engine thermostat as it is knackered .... when it did work the water wasn't scalding hot ....

Wiggy,
I am not a diesel mechanic but if I had an engine running "luke warm" I would worry! I consider temperature to be very important for efficent fuel burning.

It is not the engine that is lukewarm it is the sea water coolant.

It is only a small water jacket and the water must pass though and exhaust at a fairly fast rate, too quick to pick up any useful heat for a calorifier.

Kettle and thermos does us for a days hand washing etc.
