1GM10 oil type & quantity?

With our sailing club craning day fast approaching I am planning on changing the oil in my Yanmar 1GM10. This will be the first time since I bought the boat, and I have left the manuals on board.

So... can anyone advise on the type and quantity of oil that I need?

Can I get away with a trip to Halfords or does it need something special? [I already have a new filter & a gadget for sucking the old oil out of the dipstick tube.]

Are these likely to be the same for the 2gm do you think. Particularly the oil filter?
 
As these engines only hold a couple of litres, it doesn't cost much to put something decent in. A semi synthetic would be the minimum for any engine I intend to keep for more than a couple of years. An extra £10 or so a year if you change the oil twice, this tenner wouldn't go far in Yanmar spares! I think of it as half the cost of motorcycle oil!
Good that you are changing it before layup, best to have clean oil in it over the winter.

Semi synthetic oils are not recommended for loads of older engines.

I use Morrisons. £7.99 for 5 litres in our Peugeots, Discovery and boat engines.

I think there are two or three reasons for not recommending semi synthetic oil for old engines.
1) Some old engines have terrible oil seals which will not retain synthetic oil. I believe this is the case with some series land rovers(?).
2) The manufacturers view anything over 15 years old as scrap metal.
3) When these engines were made, synthetic oils were obscure and expensive, so they were not considered appropriate.
4) on a new, but low tech engine, some people are concerned about running in not happening properly because there is too little wear with synthetic!
A 10W-40 CF semi synth passes every test required of a 10W 30 CC. And is likely to do so a long time after your supermarket own brand stuff has broken down. Most of this cheap oil is made from recycled oil, with little quality control or traceability.
The experiments have been done fairly convincingly by slightly potty americans getting 200,000 miles out of motorbike engines. When SAE10-30 CC was state of the art, 20,000 miles would have been overdue for a rebuild.
You're entitled to think differently, but I won't buy any of your engines! (Well possibly MrCramp's peugeot as I regard them as disposable).

While we are on the subject, make sure the dip stick is pressed fully in. Recently helped a friend who believed he had a catastophic engine failure with oil everywhere. Turned out he had checked the oil and not pushed the dipstick fully home.

not as simple as that. I managed to thoroughly polish the bores of a 2GM by using (to quote both Yanmar and Castrol tech departments) too good an oil. I was recommended to use a more traditional oil of the sort you would chose for an old Leyland truck - the GM series were not the most modern of designs.

Its some time since but I seem to remember something about the problem being the extra additives in the latest oils

same happened to my my 1gm10, not through my doing. Was told by john skews yanmar dealer thats its really common for it to happen. He told me that ellen on kingfisher had same thing on yanmar generator. started using lots of oil due to glazed bores, in her case all she had was cooking oil which was used and this actually put the bore back into good enough shape and she did not have to top up any more.

Before i get shot down in flames this was something i was told so it may be inacurate.

And you need to use mineral based oil on gm range, engine and gearbox

Possibly - if the original Yanmar part numbers are the same then the answer is yes. I'm sure you can find that info on a web site somewhere, maybe the Bursledon Yanmar dealer or similar. The same would apply for the (engine) fuel filter as well.
By the way, I seem to have included part numbers for my primary fuel filter, which is probably irrelevant for most people.
