I have the tell tale drip coming from the bottom of my pump unit (drip every 5 seconds at full revs) so I guess seal has gone. Have ordered seals from Marine Power but not done this job before. Anything untoward to look out for - any advice appreciated. Thanks

It's dead easy. Just be gentle when removing the old seals so that you don't score the pump housing. Also make sure the new ones go in the correct way, it's all pretty obvious really.

Sad to say the drip is mostly going to be scoring of the shaft, not the seals.
It cost me £75 the last time I replaced it. As it is a bit of stainless rod with flats milled on the ends, an engineering shop should be able to fabricate it for less.

I have extended the life of one shaft by using a file then wet and dry sandpaper to smooth out the grooves in the shaft, while spinning the shaft in an electric drill.

I also have fitted a drip deflector to the engine - a mylar sheet between the water pump and the engine block which reduces the water dripping on to and rusting the £75 oil pipe below. It guides the water to drip from the sheet into the bilge rather than running down the front of the engine.

You might find that the seals have worn the shaft and just new seals will not help. Yanmar new shaft costs a fortune....I got one made by a local one man engineering firm who generally makes unavailable spares for vintage aircraft and racing cars....20quid!!
