Had a bad weekend last week, whilst decoking the exhaust port on the head of my yanmar 1GM I managed to go through the side of the port into the oilway where the pushrods are.
Turns out what I thought was coke was in fact rust!!
So I am now on the look out for a second hand head or maybe even a slightly larger secondhand Yanmar. Any offers??

Had to replace head on my 1GM10 due to water seeping through casting and dripping on exhaust valve seat cost about £250+vat but included valves, springs ect which I did not think was to bad. I dread to think what it would be on a volvo

you may well find that the original cause was corrosion of the exhaust elbow allowing water to splash back into the head. this is what happened to my 2gm.

check the exhaust beofre starting up the new engine.

But it isn't a Volvo, it is one of those fantastic alternative brands that never goes wrong and has very cheap parts available at every turn.........

Oh look, it's just been joined by another one with the same problem.

Glad I've got a Volvo now, it's head is made of thick stuff and wont rust through in my lifetime. Bet on the QT you wish you had a Volvo too eh?

I expect before too long we will be finding shrines in suitable marine type locations.... devoted to Yanmar, Beta, Bukh etc., you know, all the engines that never go wrong, have cheap parts, and dealers at every convenient port.

Not!
