1999 KAD 32 engines

Hello I am currently looking at a boat with 2 1999 KAD 32 engines. I am going to use the boat on the non tidal Thames and just wanted to know if these engines will be suited to river speeds only. Also are there any common issues for these engines that I should check . Many thanks Keith
 
Yes they are fine, I used to have 2x AD31P which is the same engine without the supercharger and did over 1200hrs on the Thames and also another few 100 high speed use around the south coast. At river speed you will only be at 1100-1200 rpm so well out of the supercharger and turbo ranges. They are good solid engines with no notable weaknesses, if properly maintained of course. You would probably be best concentrating on the outdrives and that those have been looked after correctly, again will be good solid DPE drives but they need servicing.
 
Lots of regular invoices regards engine servicing would be very reassuring plus invoices showing that the outdrives have been recently serviced .

If outdrives have not been done for more than 2 or 3 years, alarm bells should ringing.
Nothing done Pre COVID...you had better have deep pockets.
Have you been out on your test run yet ?
If you have any spare time go onto the MoBo forum and try to find any "VolvoPaul" posts on what to loo out for these engines and how to look after them.

Many thanks all service history was provided which appears to have been quite extensive over lay 2 yrs and had a test run and survey and have now taken the leap of faith. I am told I need drip trays under the engines of the KAD 32’s but it looks fairly tight for space to secure something Would welcome any advice /guidance. Many thanks .
 
Drip trays are likely someone thinking they are required for Boat Safety Scheme. If the space under each engine is secure from the bilges and bilge pumps (i.e. stringers enclose the space so any oil leaking from the engine can’t get into the bilge and be pumped overboard) then drip trays are not required. Does the boat already have BSS?

You haven’t said what make/model the boat is, which might help more authoritative comments.

We used to own a Sealine S34 and the space under the engines was bounded by stringers and did not require drip trays to comply with BSS. I suspect the S28 will be the same but worth joining the Sealine Forum and posing the question on there as someone will be able to give a definitive answer. They are a very friendly and helpful bunch and worth joining just to connect with like minded folk.
