Hi all,

I have a problem with my 92' 40HP Mariner - I have gone to the boat on several occasions over the past couple of weeks, when I get there it starts, then runs for a few mins with a bit of jerking and then cuts out, I can start it a second time but doesn't last long before cutting out again, then it won't start at all after that until I come back another day and does the same thing again.. Also it cuts out as soon as I put it into gear..

There also seems to be oil/fuel leaking into the water from the engine somewhere but don't know where, possibly the cowling or exhaust.. any ideas what the problem may be? could me (a novice) fix it myself? if so would anyone have any information to fix it?

Thank you in advance!

Considering you probably want to go to sea with it I'd say this is one instance if you're not mechanically proficient that you take it in to a professional before you find yourself in a dangerous situation. Having said that it sounds like your carb float my be sticking open and youre running rich / flooding the engine. Do get a pro to look at it though.

Prolly fuel gunk in the carb bowl. Like wot he said. Strip and clean. A workshop manual may help.
