Hello again,
Having bought a replacement boat trailer with separate dolly I am trying to repair the brakes. The shoes have delaminated and the brake cables were seized. I had thought I could just replace them. However I have trawled eBay, amazon and the net and can not seem to find replacement parts. I have attached pictures. 1980's I didn't think was that old for trailers. I have posted before regarding my original unbraked trailer and this replacement one.
I am happy to do the work but am now at a complete loss for replacement parts. I am hoping one of you chaps has been through something similar and have found a solution. I do not want to replace the axle I had in mind a simple repair of the original brakes and cables. Thank you for any help in even identifying the brakes ( they appear like knotts trailer brakes but of an older design!)image.jpg

Thanks for the reply.
Ref the cables I've seen that and many other sites the cable ends are different. See pics. I could maybe adapt the cable that has the correct end that goes through the back plate by changing the balancing joint to one with screw threads. I was just hoping for a straight replacement.
Ref the brake shoes. I guess your suggesting I get the existing ones relined and that's a good idea if I can't find new ones. Thanks again Hardenough.

Ok I give in! Sunday is a failure so far. I don't want to break anything but does anyone know how to remove the brake cable from the shroud on the rear of the brake back plate. The shroud isn't in 2 half (as in all the you tube vids etc I've looked at) it is welded onto the back plate (see pic) which suggests the outer cable is screwed into the shroud?? Any ideas anyone.
Thanks

When I had similar problems to you,I went to the nearest caravan sales center and came out with new cables and shoes, without too much pain to the wallet. You could also try Towsure.

For the brakes shoes it's worth trying a good motor factors. Some years ago I took a shoe from my 1973 glider trailer in to the factor in Thirsk and asked, rather apologetically, if he could find a set like it. He looked at it, looked at me, and laughed. The immediately preceding customer had been in for precisely the same shoes for an old caravan. He had them off the shelf and on the counter for me within twenty seconds.

Caravan depots and towsure should be good at identifying parts especially if you can take bits to them. If all fails with the shoes try a truck brake depot many can bond new linings to existing shoes. Good luck, though I have ended up making parts before now.

Just a final update to the repair works.
I was unable to find a direct replacement set of cables but at a local trailer repair specialist "Warwickshire Trailers" they had a set of brake cables with the correct end to fit the brake shoes but with a threaded rod at the other end to which I could fit an adapter to give me the correct configuration. See picture

With regard to the brake shoes. I had been investigating having the existing shoes relined but the same trailer specialist had 2 old sets of shoes on the shelf.
With regard to bearings one side needed replacing see pic and I optained a new set of timken bearings quite easily.
Trailer now fully up and running
Thank you everyone for your help.
