1960 dolphin 20

Dolphin 20

Hi Chas,
Who's a lucky boy? wish I still had mine, I'm sure it will have reached the end of it's life now, being a marine ply version. Your boat has exactly the same power set up as mine. Can you still get bits for the Enfield Z drive. Some Dolphins had the OMC engine/outdrive fitted. You will find the boat to be tail heavy and if you want it to plane fully loaded you may need to fit trim tabs and careful experimenting with prop pitch, but it will plane. Excellent boat for messing about on the river.
Will we see some pics later down the line.

Good luck with the project
Regards
Richard Green

Great little boats

Hi all i am also new to this site and have found all your info very handy i have one off these little 20 dolphin Boats that i am doing up at the moment i think my one must have been altered as the roof is split in two so you get more room in the first part of the cabin and the it gets a bit lower in the next part and the top screen is made in wood and glass and folds down if neededi was woundering if ant body else had one the same anmd if so hade any photos to post just so i can get some idea for the refurb thank you

Thank you all so much for this interesting thread esp. the OP. Just what PBO should be about, it should not be about £500,000 gin palaces cruising in foreign climes.

I agree with you Paddington.
Our family of four had so much fun on our 20' Dolphin in the late 70's, was able to tour miles and miles of rivers and canals in our area. Last year
I visited the boat club I then belonged to, just to see if there was anyone still there from that period. Was quite interesting to see that the club was being run by the children of the members from the seventies and also the boats had now grown. Not a single boat less than 30'. (not narrow boats)
Bet they don't have as much fun as we did.

Richard

Hello Nigel,
I think this is the type of Dolphin you have.
Although this boat has been sold there are some 80 pics of it that might be of use to you. You have to register on the website to view.

Dolphin motor boats were made by brookland aviation near Northampton.

I has a 19 built of ply in the mid 1970 that I used on the canals around Birmingham and the West Midlands. I moved to Northampton in about 1979 and took it there an the river Nene. When I left the UK in 1982 I sold the Dolphin.

I modified mine by fitting a 1100 cc ford petrol engine with a jet drive

Re: dolphine 20

Mine was marine ply was built in 1969 and was fitted with a 1600cc Ford engine coupled to an Enfield outdrive she do 30 knots. We went on many holidays on her during the 70's touring the North and Midland Canals in England. We had to endure the River Humber and Tidal Trent to get on to the Canals which the boat handled very well. I miss her so much.

Re: dolphine 20

What confused me there was the front window. On the middle photo it looks convex. But the other two its flat. Mine is convex. The blind novice. Name says it all . Greatfull for the help whoever solves this mystery gets a very big beer. Or lunch if you prefer.

Hi all! I am the proud owner of a late 70's Dolphin with GRP hull and topsides; my father bought her as a bare hull/superstructure from Harry Kitchener Marine in 1979,and I believe she is one of 20 that were constructed with GRP hull and topsides? I inherited her when she was about 50% finished and now in 2011 I am still working on her! The build is more like a refurb/build as all her internals, which are varnished mahogany ply have had to be stripped and revarnished. She is fitted with a 1600GT Mk.2 Ford Cortina marinised engine and Enfield Z drive, both of which I have recently rebuilt,as I intend to get her where she belongs,as soon as I can, in the water on a sunny day! I would love to know if any other 100% GRP Dolphins are still around and of any other Dolphins in the Northampton/Midlands area? All the best, Chas bluepolara
I have a dolphin 20 with a GRP Hull based in Stratford upon Avon. She is currently going through the progress of being restored
