Hi,

I need to purchase 20 metres of 18mm/20mm good quality galvanised mooring chain over the next couple of days.

Obviously I don't want to compromise on the quality side of things, but given that like most we're not awash with cash ...I'd like to source chain at the lowest price I can.

It seems to me that I can either:

1) source it locally near the Forth in Scotland.
2) purchase it online.

Sourcing locally might save on delivery charges. However, I'd welcome any supplier recommendations for either.

Thanks in advance!

Give this guy a shout. He sells on ebay, I have used him for calibrated chain and rope. He was half the cost of Jimmy Green and the goods I have got are of very good quality. Service is excellent also. He will make up custom packages, do splices, etc. His ebay id is uk-yacht-rigging-and-supplies

Locally (River Forth - North side) we have tended to get our chain from Hendersons in Glasgow at the begining of the season when our moorings are being checked, The club get some discount.

Last season however I ended up going my own way and bought my chain from Boat Gear Direct.

I was very happy with their goods and service.

Bit of a drift

Another vote for hendersons. Have used them before

Sorry, but bit of a hijack here but seems relevant. I am also about to lay a mooring in the Forth and would like to get one laid professionally (not much margin for error in the location I have). Does anyone know of any professional mooring contractors in Fife or the Lothians? I have only know of the Clyde ones.

Thanks

Recently I have been looking in some detail at chain available in UK and collecting samples for testing. It is clear that Chinese made chain is probably responsible for well over 50% of the market place. Unlike some I don't see this as necessarily a bad thing: China is perfectly capable of making high quality stuff, it just depends upon the specification they are given. Several big UK suppliers source their chain in China, where they ensure quality by regular routine proof testing. Otherwise I know of chain manufacture in Holland and France as the source of major UK suppliers.

It's not up to me to reveal the source of chain at this stage but I can recommend Bradney Chain and Island Chain in Shrewsbury http://www.islandchain.btinternet.co.uk/ as reliable sources of mooring chain sizes. I am not including anchor chain in this list.

I have not contacted EYE or Hendersons so cannot speak for them.

Thank you

Many thanks to all those who responded.

Your replies have given me a really good place to start. I have checked out the websites of those companies mentioned, and spoken to a few directly. So far, EYE have been particularly helpful.

Just a quick note for anyone reading this thread in the future; EYE are the owners of BoatGearDirect.co.uk

Thank you all once again.

i always use bill simpson at granton to lay my moorings he's been very good with me and other members of the surrounding clubs.
he has a good boat to lay moorings, also forth ports and other marine companys use him to do some of their work from surveying to salvaging.
