18 GM Belt tension

New belt...correctly tensioned...run engine for half a hour..rubber dust everywhere...Why?

The Yanmar original alternator drive belts, actually made by Mitsubishi, are notorious for shedding dust and often only last a season or so. I have switched to a Gates Rubber Company toothed “V” belt and its still going after 4 seasons with no dust. The belt for the 2GM20F is the Gates Extra Service No 6469 EXL AVX 13x975 La. 13x975 refers to the width & length in mms. The belt for the 2GM20 will be different as it does not have to go round a freshwater pump drive pulley. These belts can be sourced from motor factors at a fraction of the cost of the Yanmar belts.

However, the comments above about corrosion on the pulleys and misalignment are also very relevant and would not help the problem.

Thanks everyone for the advice and info..I have checked alingment and made sure that the pulleys were rust free .I have also fitted the recommended Yanmar belt. But in the meantime a marine engineer has also contacted me pointing out that the Missubishi belts are "Not good" (he wasnt that polite) So I will source .some Gates Rubber Co ones and try again If anyone is interested I will update in a week or so.
