I see jeepster still thinks he doesn't need a VHF, and yes whilst not compulsary if he intends to launch from Dover he will need to contact Dover VTS by VHF just to leave the harbour, fines for getting in the way of ferry are likely to be severe.

I am contemplating crossing the channel on my Marina 17' x 6'3", 2 berth cabin cruiser, with up to six on board. Its got a planing hull so it can handle the sea no problem but the problem is I only have a 9.9 hp four stroke outboard.

I feel quite grateful to the OP for his post as it has certainly flushed out the best and good in peoples knowledge and advice acorss a whole spectrum of issues. Very very interesting and at times funny too!!
