Here's another collection for you to puzzle over with your glass of malt. Unlike last year, I haven't entirely played fair, but you should get most of them. All taken this summer in Holland and Norderney. Good luck.

Hard to be certain with some of the pix, but here's my entry.
1/ oystercatcher
2/ ? could be a crow or harrier?
3/ grebe- lings
4/marsh harrier
5/ rooks
6/ a hawk, kestrel?
7/ egret
8/ plover
9/ little tern
10/ wyvern [ or Vauxhall]
11- 15 in roughly left to right order.
tern, greylag geese, canada geese, mallard, shellduck, stork?, avocet, blackback gulls, cormorants or shags [I fancy shags]
16-21
more shellduck, mallard, brent geese, black headed gulls, coot, tufted ducks?

Good effort.
2,5,6 wrong.7 incomplete, 8, 9 & 10 wrong. 11-15 no tern, stork, avocet, Canada geese or shags. Mallard possible but I don't think so. 16-21 no brents. Well done with the tufted duck. You missed the rabbit
No 10 is supposed to be a real bird which it doesn't resemble in the least.

Following the overwhelming response to this quiz, and to put thousands out of their misery, here are the answers, bearing mind that I got a better view of the original birds, some through binoculars.
1 Oystercatcher, of course.
2 Common Buzzard, but looks a bit like a crow here.
3 Young Grebes
4 Marsh Harrier, more often seen with wings in a V
5 Jackdaws
6 Marsh Harrier again
7 Great Egret, much bigger than Little and more yellow on beak
8 Turnstone, you should have got that.
9 Common Tern, not Little (I saw some today off Stone Point)
10 Pelican, apparently. That's what it says in the church guide.
11-15 L-R roughly. B/H Gull, Greylag Geese, Cormorant, Shelduck, Spoonbills, Lesser B/B Gull (1 extra for luck).
16-21 L-R again. Shelduck, G/C Grebe, Greylag Geese, B/H Gulls Tufted Duck, Coot & a Rabbit in the foreground for luck.

I think the jackdaw one was a trick question.
My usual guidance with corvids is, if you see a rook, it's probably a crow. If you see lots of crows they are probably rooks.
A pelican? Not very good is it?

My father used to say the same about rooks/crows.
It must be a pelican if a man of God says so.
