Checking out my boat at the weekend I noticed that the T junction on my internal water supply pipeline had frozen and come apart. The pipework is plastic US half inch with pushfit connectors and I wondered whether a replacement standard 15mm pushfit would work. I am aware that the half inch refers to the internal diameter and that the 15 mm is the external
Thanks in anticipation

is that external/internal measurement a certain one ? I've used 12mm tube on a 1/2 inch spigot; it fitted with a bit of warming.

They should be interchangeable,as when the UK changed from Imperial to Metric, half inch fitted 15 mm without any adaptors etc. (not sure about US though) If you are using plastic pushfit connectors, there should be no problem as the seal is made by an o ring in the fitting, which will have a bit of tolerance. Best idea is to try a new one and see how it goes. Don't forget to use an insert in the end of the pipe. If it leaks, you could use a compression fitting which as the name suggests squeezes a brass olive onto the pipe ..this will work with plastic pipe as long as you fit said insert, and will not push off as easily as a plastic fitting. Hope this helps.

hi
1/2" imperial is marginally smaller than 15mm pipe , if as suggested you try a 15mm fitting & it leaks you will find it hard to get a 1/2" fitting in uk,
i live in ireland & we still use imperial fittings , if you need one pm me & ill post it

almost. you are supposed to use different olives, but this was before push fit was on the scene!

they are not far off tho, so see what works. interesting ireland are still on imperial.

I think you won't have a problem.
In the changeover to mrtric in the 1970's the one bit of copper piping that didn' t need stecial adapters was 1/2" to its nearest metric size 15mm. All the rest did. Even though the Americans have different size gallons and pints from us their feet and inches are the same. A simple push fit with an insert wshould be fine.
Did some work on my daughters house (some VERY old plumbing) this weeekend and did just this. No problems.

.

No.. you are thinking of the 3/4" to 22 mm. 15 mm and 1/2" will interchange with the same olive.
I was around during the changeover and fitted many.

I'm surprised that you still use imperial fittings in Ireland, where are they manufactured?

yep its a p i t a as most showers/taps etc are metric
fitting are made here , we have a push fit brand called qualpex, & a few others
compression fittings are made here & some spurious chinese ones
the reason we didn't go metric i believe was to protect the irish copper industry so we wouldn't import cheap copper from uk , acorn & john guest made an attempt to enter the market but were too expensive
yep imperial fittings maby deep down we want to be british

That's really interesting, and surprising that Ireland has stayed non metric.
