150 khz transducer change

i have a seafarer echo sounder, one of those whirlygig jobs. I think the transducer is 150 khz. does anyone know if i can use the same transducer to runa digital echo, so i can put it in the cockpit, instead of keep running inside!

Gneerally speaking , no. More recent sounders tend to work on 200khz, and if the seafarer transducer works at all with the newer ones, there will be a major loss of sensitivity - not to mention possible long term probs with the electronics.

I am not sure but I seem to remember the Nasa Stingray worksat 150khz so functions ok with a seafarer transducer - anyone know for certain?

It worked for me. I connected my Corus depth to the old transducer from the Seafarer, and it worked fine.

oldharry is right, there are two common frequencies for depth sounders, 150kHz and 200kHz. If the new and the old operate on the same frequency then there should be no problem. In my case I believe both operated at 150kHz, I did check at the time but I have forgotten which it was. There is at least one other common brand (maybe NASA?) that also operates at that frequency.

Most of Seafarers later transducers were manufactured by Nasa and Nasa still operates on 150 Khz. Most of those that have changed have done so because of the US market where 200 Khz is the norm.

So yes you can choose a Target 2 or Clipper sounder from Nasa to do the job you want. BTW if you want inside and outside choose Clipper because we've got a £39.95 offer on the repeaters at the moment.
