14 yr old's boat left in Antigua.................

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

Any positive feelings I have to laud Michael (and yes he did it) are completely overwhelmed by those of disbelief that his father allowed him to do it, and overwhelming relief that he (Michael) survived. It wasnt a solo record, it isnt something that should be encouraged, and quite frankly, his father should be utterly ashamed of himself. I just hope Michael doesnt have a 9 year old sister. Leave the boat in the US and forget the whole thing happened.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

If you insist that Antigua is part of America, I will not argue about it.
I am not so sure that any Antiguans would agree though.
Same as saying that Barbados is part of America.
We would be most offended.
One could then say that the UK is part of America, as their two head honchos are in the political bed together.
But I wont go down that road!
Because this thread is about Michael, and his acheivement, and his boat.
I reckon they should flog the boat(s) for a sizeable sum to any gullible person(s) who is/are easily swayed by rock stars, and go back home and build another one for the RTI.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

so long as you recognise the achievement was a flotilla holiday.

lets not beat around the bush - it has been mis-reported that the achievement was a 'solo' passage

the rest is history

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

he was alone on the boat, so solo. Round the world racers are solo, but 'cruise' in company with other boats doing the same. No one every accuses them of not being solo

Your just being a -Solo-ist! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

You know some ones going to do it though Neil, and they will all live happily ever after!

(With a tie in to the Dads business!!!!)

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

Ye gods ... give it a rest!

When you've managed to sail your boat by yourself across the Atlantic please come back and snipe...

As a kid I was given free reign ... in a Mirror dinghy, later upgrading to a 420... probably at about aged 14 ... I loved racing in the local club races and still do all these years later...
What the lad has achieved is flamin marvelous. Yer, ok, his Dad runs the company that builds these boats and tagged along with him, but he didn't step onboard did he? So the lad did sail the Atlantic ... which is far more than I've done (and probably more than most on here)
I'm jealous and wish I'd got time/money to do a similar trip.

Perhaps he should've got sponsorship though - that could've paid for the return carriage....

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

daddy stated he (and his crew mate) kept watch from a mile or so from little sonny throughout the voyage

now this statement was either to comfort his memshaib or illustrates to me that sonny was escorted on his voyage

but maybe I am too cynical

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in Antigua.................

He will just have to wait for a 12 year old Antiguan to go for the next record and sail it back here!

Given it's pedigree I would have thought he would get his money back, then daddy can sell another from his stock over here!

---- and also drop the "Hero" bit . He did what he did but a Hero ??? Nah .

No, but then they don't make noise about their inability to afford to get their boats back either.......

This looks to me like a cynical attempt to get someone else to cough up the cash......

You too eh? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

That is the logical outcome and was probably the plan all along. Whether this story is a publicity puff to assist the sale or has come out despite their best efforts remains to be seen.

The whole frigging stunt..

... was to seek publicity for his dad's yacht designs and company.

What went wrong with the original sponsorship or was it yet another case of good old British lack of forethought?

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in Antigua.................

Wont it fit in a container, cant see that costing 10 grand. Could then pick it up in Devon if he's quick

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in Antigua.................

Hang on a minute...As I understand it, the Dad's somehow involved with the company that made the yacht (UK Agent, maybe?) - If that's the case, surely selling the yacht is a positive outcome!!

Now he's such a consumate seaman, why doesn't he sail it back?

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in America.................

Well that's just first class planning, failing to take into account how to bring the boat back... nice!

If they thought about it a wee bit more they could use the Atlantic crossing boat for all sorts of promotions e.g. Boat show, step on the Atlantic T28 we can make the same mods for you for X quid. How's about around Britain race Father and son together etc. etc. and factor that into the overall holiday plan.

Surely they could sell those Sat phones they used on ebay, that would generate some cash /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But hey ho, I guess Mikes father didn't think about much at all really for their flotilla holiday.

Re: 14 yr old\'s boat left in Antigua.................

Have I missed the boat here. Is it not just a ploy to get someone to stomp up the money to bring juniors boat back. Also how is daddy's boat coming back?
