12v Waterproof Connections

I have used buccaneer conectors which come on Simrad Autopilots. You can get them from Farnell components or RS Components. Any large chandler will stock them. Paul

Hi Brendan,

I'd go for Dri-Plugs. They are push fit and much easier to use than the Buccaneer screw type. They do lots of different combinations (e.g. for VHF, Multi-connections etc) and mine have given perfect service for 21 years now - pretty good I reckon. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The connectors Compass Watersports supply are pretty good. They are actually made by a German company called Binder. I've used them without problem for 5 years now.

(see www.binder-connector.de look for series 692)

The current Compass website listing for these connectors is wrong, but their printed catalogue is correct. You can order a free catalogue from

www.compass24.com

As with all these connectors, a smear of vaseline on the sealing ring/gasket yearly helps no end.

No connection with either company.

I fully approve your recommendation for the Binder plugs. Have used them in the past and behaved like no other plug system I have known: just great for boats!

Unless you want to be able to disconnect this join, I would not consider a plug and socket type connection. I would solder in an extra length of wire, covering each conductor with adhesive-lined heatshrink and another heatshrink over the whole lot. This is much neater and much less likely to fail.

<font color="blue"> Where can I buy waterproof 12v connectors please?

I need to remount the rear nav light which will involve extending the cable and I want a good waterproof connection above deck.

Thanks

I really don't like "waterproof" connectors. They always seem to corrode (if not when the connection is made then if they are disconnected for any time. Also water frequently gets in via the back of the connector and corrodes the wires inside.

Rather than that I would go for deck glands - if necessary with a connector just under the deck - it seems a vastly more reliable system to me.
