My boat has a small inline 12v pump fitted on the supply from the tank, to the engine, (Md21b).

This which makes it very easy to bleed lines after fuel filters have been changed, it is only used for a short time and essentially does the job of the manual lift pump,( which is awkward to reach).

It has packed up and needs to be replaced.

This type of pump is available on many sites, but I am concerned that they will not allow fuel to flow through when they are not supplied with current,

Does anyone have any experience of this type of pump, or know of a type that will allow pass through.

Regards

Tony.

They ask for feedback on their listing and specifically ask if there is anything that they have left out. If you ask them they'll probably let you know.

I like the fact that a normal lift pump is mechanical and will continue to pump even if you lose all electrics. By all means fit an electric pump for priming (if you must) but don't make your fuel system less robust.

I fitted an in-line 12v pump a few weeks back as a back-up and to make filter changing/priming easier. It WILL allow fuel through when not switched on and made the priming of filters ect soooo much easier than using my old hard to reach CAV type hand pump.

HOWEVER........I now have an issue where the revs drop off every now and then as if its searching for fuel? I think it may be the pre-filter on the 12v pump (which the instructions say MUST be used) which may be too fine for the fuel to pass through? I don't have the filter size to hand (the microns number thingy) but am wondering if its more of a petrol filter than a diesel?

You could fit it in parallel rather than in-line with the CAV pump assuming it has built in non returns.

They no doubt say the filter must be used as in some applications it will be the only filter but, as you have a CAV filter before the electrical pump, I'd punch a hole through the pumps filter and see what happens.

Graham...my CAV filters are AFTER the pump as I am under the impression the pump is a "push" rather than a "suck"?.....however, the pump is lower than the fuel level in the tank so I may put it AFTER the CAV filters and then try it. The filter that came with the pump is only a small jobby that screws into the inlet side of the pump where the hose tail screws in so its just a case of replacing it with a hose tail.

After a while, I had a fuel starvation problem with my electric pump which has a small replacable cartridge filter, until I put a spin on (similar size to CAV 296) before it. Although there wasn't any crud large enough to see, it appeared that the small filter was restricting flow and needed changing more often that a larger filter.
