12v AC to DC ??

pcatterall,

Lots of people use 12v DC fans designed for desktop computers. They are available in a range of sizes and power so you should find one to fit. They are also very inexpensive.

Part P was nothing to do with Europe.............. and electrical trade bodies lobbying for a rule that pushes more work towards their members.

Pete

Best post on Part P I have ever seen :)

(I did however also manage to drill clean through a diagonal cable buried in the plaster in my first (brand-new, 1970) house. It was only when I put in a screw that the fuse went pop. Long before RCD's of course :D )

I would suggest that the reason the bathroom extractor fan is 12v AC is: a) 12 volts is a safe voltage to use in a relatively wet environment, b) 12v AC can easily and cheaply be provided by a step-down isolation transformer, and needs nothing else, c) it's much easier to make a brushless (if indeed that's what it is) motor to run on AC than DC.

Me ? I'd use a 12 DC fan from an old 'puter power supply - but that's 'cause I'm a cheapskate.

Bathroom electrics nowadays need to be in Ip65 fittings and often are 12v as it's easier to meet IP65 with 12V

Great thread, but cant let this go by. Ip Rating is only about the enclosure. Actually applies whether or not there is anything electrical inside that enclosure.

The IP Code ( Ingress Protection Rating,[1] sometimes also interpreted as International Protection Rating[2]) of the letters IP followed by two digits or one digit and one letter and an optional letter. As defined in international standard IEC 60529, IP Code classifies and rates the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in mechanical casings and with electrical enclosures.

The standard aims to provide users more detailed information than vague marketing terms such as waterproof. However, no edition of the standard is openly published for unlicensed readers.

So whether the enclosure contains 12volts 240volts is irrelevant to the ip rating.
cheers
