12 year old Yanmar GM2 - things to look for

Dylan

Yanmars are good. They are (one of the few?) small marine diesel engines that are designed from the start for that purpose. They are not a small land use engine marinised. We had a 2GM that had the martec freshwater cooling conversion on it in our last boat. It ran like a dream, never needed anything serious doing to it - standard oil and filter changes. It was from 1988 and never missed a beat. No gearbox issues, no problems starting in cold ( we were base in oban). It gave us plenty of hot water and charged a 160AHr leisure bank no problem.

It's true that Thermoking used to use Yanmar twin and triple engines for their chiller trailers - though I believe they now use another supplier. A friend and I picked one up from a crashed truck. The base engine was the same as a 2GM, although the front end ancillaries are very different and for use on a boat you need to marinise it with a water injected exhaust, heat exchanger and raw water pump ( it has a car style internal pump for fresh water). We fitted a pump on the end of the camshaft, an cheap Lucas alternator had a n exhausr bend fabricated for us and used an oil cooler for the heat exchanger. It is generally cheaper to source filters and spares and maybe even get fuel system servicing (pump and injectors) done by the people who service such trucks, though.

Dylan. Would you mind removing my comments lifted from here and placed in your website please? IIRC Poking around in boatyards bit
Thank you

+1
We abused a 2gm for over 7 years and never had a single problem with it. I don't remember servicing it that much either.
I think Charles just likes taking things apart....

Are we any nearer to convincing you to try the grey engine, with backup..a centaurs insides could be so easily fettled by you a bit. At the end of the trip a proven - and indeed KTL famous- diesel engined centaur would be something eh?

The engine is yours for the asking

12 years old in excellent running order...... according to my man

if anyone wants to buy the Tollesbury Centaur from my man Bert/Julian/Stan then you can remove the engine, the radar and the life raft and sell me the husk

PM me and I will give you his phone number

meantime the story of my experience with him are on my website

he is a well known local colourful character

An excellent deal for a n other no doubt.

I have turned on my radar in real earnest once only since owning the boat. I resent the theoretical weight windage and wires aloft but , '' if it ain't broken......."

I agree... it is not worth a penny to me - but to others who sail in crowded waters or who love their toys then I an sure they are wonderful

I would have it off before you could say knife

I am still hopeful that some-one will buy the boat for the engine and gear-box

it was funny how in one part of the conversation with the Marsh Pirate the engine and gearbox was worth £1500

and in the next bit it was worth £800
