12\" winch handle - do they exist?

SWMBO can't really haul me up the mast - or out of the water with our 10" winch handles. Do 12" ones exist and if so, where? Otherwise I'll have to go on a severe diet!

I never found one. but why go on a diet. instead, you haul swmbo up the mast. my wife goes up there

One of the funniest events at our club was when two sailors hauled one's wife up the mast to install the anenometer after lay up. typical spring day and no sooner had they got her up there than a heavy short rain squall appeared. they cleated her off and darted below to stay dry. you should have heard the language.

That's why Mrs Maxi made me fit steps to the mast on our present boat, great idea really makes getting up and down a complete doddle.

Unfortunately it is not 20" but should read 20cm i.e. 8". /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I think that I am going to make one, afterall it will only be used very rarely. I did think about getting a winch bit from winchbit.com in the US of A but it sells for $44.95 which will, with freight and tax be near £40 so I am going to get my lathe working and see what I can come up with.

Lateral thunk

Send SWMBO up the mast?

Seriously, if you sit there like a sack of spuds and expect anyone to haul you up it's pretty tall order.
The approved method is for you to shim and the hauler to be there to help and, most importantly, let you down in a controlled manner.

The number of times I've seen a person on a bosuns' chair with 3/4 red-faced grunting chaps at the bottom.

Personally, being single-handed, I have a set of tape mast-steps which go up the mainsail track on the 12mm Dyneema main halyard.
Now that provides its own challenges....

I didn't know these were available again. Looks like the ideal solution. Have asked for details and if I do get one, will let you all know how it pans out. Thanks Matt.

Re: 12\" winch handle - do they exist?

I've had an Easywinch for more than a decade - not cheap, but it was cheaper than upgrading my winches! It also means that SWMBO can haul me up the mast. Could be ideal for you.

Horendous cost and requires attachment to the hull. Dont know why they have engineered it like that - the old Sturmey Archer bike gearbox type system would have given the necessary reduction without needing to faster to the hull.

Plus the gearing change on the Easywinch is arguably too great

Better off simply getting and olf Lewmar metal handle and welding an extra length of pipe in the middle to make a 12 or 14 inch handle.

Re: 12\" winch handle - do they exist?

A long ratchet socket wrench - the square end fits the winch opening. My cheap extendable car tyre wrench (without the socket) fits fine too.

Re: 12\" winch handle - do they exist?

Very expensive at £341.55 so am looking again at the winchbit and using a socket ratchet wrench. Need some sort of winchbit as a 1/2" socket wrench is not big enough and next size up, 3/4" too large.

I don't know what you mean about requiring attachment to the hull /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif The Easywinch comes with a wire strop which we simply make secure to the nearest cleat or fastening. Our winches all have cleats near them....it's sort of traditional... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
