12 Volt Replacement LED Bulbs

Actually no, the lamp is laying on a silicone rubber mat, with a cardboard tube around it. With the lux meter in place, the top was also blocked off. Not exactly as it would be in a lamp fitting, but better than free air.

I refitted all of our cabin lights with G4 9 SMD 2835 planar disc lamps with side pins last year - £5.50 each from Boatlamps. Excellent service, easy replacement, all work well and produce pleasant comfortable light, easily bright enough for working/reading.

I've been replacing all lamps on board with LEDs bit by bit. The LED replacement fluorescent tubes that Boatlamps sell are amazing, but I have three more to replace and at £25 each it's prohibitive all at once. As I say, bit by bit!

Having recently purchased replacement 12v G4 LED Bulbs for a very reasonable sum of £8.99 for 10 from Amazon, having been advised they were good for voltage variations up to 15v, and found that 4 out of the 6 replaced failed when the battery charger was in boost mode with an output of 14.3v. These bulbs were similar in shape to the G4 Halogen replaced being just a little larger. I understand that one can purchase disc shaped G4 LED replacements that have voltage tolerant circuitry and are rated at 10v - 30v, but cost around £4.90 each! Since, I have around 16 halogen to replace, I consider £80 probably not worth it. Does any forumite know of a reasonably priced 12v LED that is suitably tolerant to voltages up to around 15 - 16v?

To conclude my investigations - I have now purchased 16 x G4 Led disc shaped lamps rated at 1.3watts with a given tolerance of 8v - 30v from Ultraleds http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/g4-dc-8-led-warm-white-led-bulb-8v-30v-2w-15w.html at a price per Led of around £2.50 each incl VAT, discount and postage.
They have performed fine in the short time they have been installed, taking a voltage up to 14.8v.

The lamps rated with voltage ranges '8 to 30' Volts or similar will probably have switching regulators in.
These may or may not cause interference to VHF, navtex, mobile phone etc.
Navtex, at around 500kHz is particularly vulnerable, as is Radio 4 Long wave.
