110v or 240v converter

Converter or inverter?

That video is talking about a 12 V DC to 110 V AC inverter, and not a 110 V AC to 12 V DC converter.

A small inverter does use less current than a large inverter. Whether an inverter delivering 110 V AC and 2 amps is more or less efficient than one delivering 220 V AC and 1 amp, I am not sure. It probably depends a lot on the design, true sine wave or trapazoid, etc..

A further alternative is a converter from 12 V DC to 5 V DC (or whatever voltage the device's battery needs to charge). That looks like a more efficient route than going from 12 V DC to 110 V AC and then back through the battery charger to (5) V DC.

Many chargers (non-switched-mode types) simply won't work on 110 Volts. In any case, 12V chargers for battery powered equipment are (generally) more efficient than any solution that involves stepping up the voltage to 110 or 240.

110 volts

agree the ideal is not to step it up at all - but all cameras come with a mains charger unit - most run on both 240 and 110v

12 volt versions are available - but they cost money

I had been using a small 110volt unit when working abroad for pro jobs- charging batteries in the van.

Since then I have done some tests with one of those beer can devices - it ran hot and used a lot more power (judged using avometer - than the 110 doing the same job - and it was bigger and cost more -

The little 110 unti cost me $8 and runs stone cold.

So athough I am always prepared to acknowledge the inherent superiority of well thought out theory over suck and see experience .....

on this occasion I am sticking with my 110 volts.

also my elec trics are in the bog - as someone said - better to pee on 110volts than 240

sailing on the cheap is better than not sailing at all

110volts probably better then

this from a response to the original youtube item

Theoretically there should be no difference. But in practice the ferrites used in those inverters are far from perfect! So Dylan is probably right in observing that the 110V inverters waste less electricity. I for one build my own chargers which run on 12V. Isnt as sightly as commercial chargers but a whole lot cheaper and works just as well! Being a radio amatuer I build them so they dont cause as much interference as the commercial ones which are often unbelievably "loud"
