10,000 little boys

I have a Scout Troop staying on my River Front this weekend. They have enough equipment and tents to house an army including a dozen or so canoes. When you see them all running around doing what kids do it seems like there's 10,000 of them but I am assured there's only 20 or so.
Great to see kids having real fun in the open air and allowed to run free.

Obviously some of that is due to your munificence - so thank you Byron!

Despite the bad press that Scouting has had in previous years, it's great to see organised youth activities beginning to grow again. I've always believed that part of young people's problems is due to them not being able to rush around and do "things".

In my schooldays we did sports o two half days a week, played soldiers on another, cycled to school for six miles and generally didn't have time to cause trouble. It may have made me a "better person"....

Great, good on you. I attribute all my hunger for learning practical skills to years in cubs and then scouts 50 odd years ago. It was brilliant. Pity the Elf 'n Safety and the PC Brigade w@nkers have ruined it and it's image for so many kids. At a time when my imagination could be fired it was, all credit to them.

I only managed a month or two in the Sea Cubs due to the transient nature of my life as a kid (always away on Dad's ship). I did so enjoy the camaraderie and envied the kids with loads of badges I never was around long enough to achieve anything /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif . Never-the-less those few weeks in my life are treasured memories /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
This morning was so cool. I watched from my window as they raised the flag on my flag pole and all saluted. I got quite soppy seeing that. Then I snapped out of it and berated them for not giving the Nazi salute, I didn't realise they weren't the Hitler Youth /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We have the whole of Richmond Upon Thames District Scouts camping at Marble Hill Park, Twickenham this weekend.

Each Group is dressing up as an Ancient Civilisation. The Explorers (14-18 year olds) are all together in one compound and they are dressed as "Romans in Britain".

So picture the scene as the boys and girls enter the arena. The boys are in armour (cardboard) carrying shields, wearing plastic helmets and carrying plastic swords.

The nubile nymphets are wearing mums best bedsheets as Togas.

They then play an "Its a Knockout" style game where one team trys to build an aquaduct out of plastic guttering to transfer coloured water across the arena. The other team are attacking them with water sodden sponges.

What a laugh. Did they get soaked? You bet they did!

The audience of mums, dads and general public loved it and so did they.

The final is tomorrow!
