1/4" drive socket set

The difference between the cheap ratchets and the Halfords Professional range is that the Halfords have a finer ratchet - ideal for tight spaces on a boat

Ratchet spanners with robust mechanism requires just 6 degrees movement to turn fastener

The lifetime guarantee is a bit of a misnomer as they don't guarantee the one thing most likely to break - the ratchet mechanism - as I found out a few months back.

When buying a 1/4 drive set, check the size of the head of the ratchet. Some are nearly as large as a 3/8 drive ratchet which defeats the object some.

The ratchet mechanism will have worn out, you cannot guarantee against wearing out.

This set ticks all my boxes: http://amzn.to/1vJQ91X

Decent make (not Blackspur, Am-Tech or Rolson)
Plastic case
6-Point face drive
A few deep sockets in addition to regular ones
Release button on ratchet
Reasonable price

Only thing missing is 6.5mm socket, although a 1/4" would be even better (some worm drive clamps are 1/4")

That's my Christmas present to me sorted then. Thanks.

Apparently not now!!! I bought 3 halfords reject socket drivers from a boot sale. Brand new but seized. I know the spares are readily available so off i waltzed into my local halfords, put the 3 mechanisms on the counter. The sales assistant said are these for a halfords driver, i said yes the originals have seized. He said either take these F.O.C or bring the originals back for a replacement!!. He said the new CEO was adament that if you sold a socket set with a lifetime guarantee everything was under guarantee. Saying that i use one daily and have not had to replace anything yet through breakage

Just my luck :ambivalence: cost me £14 for a replacement.

BTW: re Galadriel's earlier post - it was breakage rather than wear & tear IMO.

BTW2: I lost a 10mm ratchet spanner over the side (I know I should have used the cheap spanners for deck work) which left a hole in my set. According to the Ipswich branch they don't sell individual ratchet spanners anymore, only complete sets. However, there's bloke on eBay who obviously buys sets & then splits it to sell individual spanners. Speedy service & not too expensive username: mercurymouse0

Its important with ratchets that you keep the gear wheel and pawl clear, to wash it out and oil it with a very light oil, like winch oil, but not grease.
